Day Trip in Ayutthaya from Bangkok

IMG_8886.JPG

On our first day in Thailand, we went to Ayutthaya, capital of the Kingdom of Siam before. It is an hour and 30-minute drive from Bangkok. So, from Bangkok, we rented a van for a day with a guide and driver to tour us around Ayutthaya.

In this blog, I want to share with you how my trip went and my favorite spot for each temple to take an Instagram-worthy photo!

1. Wat Yai Chai Mongkol

First stop was Wat Yai Chai Mongkol. The entrance fee for this temple (Wat) is 20 THB (Php 31.90). It was surreal to see enormous stupas and Buddhas upclose. My favorite spot for this temple is the courtyard lined with sitting Buddhas.

*Just be mindful when taking photos, make sure not to do anything to disrespect their Buddhas*

2. Wat Mahathat

Next stop was Wat Mahathat. This is where the Buddha’s head in tree roots is! And of course, this would be the perfect place to take that shot. As you might wonder why I was wearing a scarf in the photo, this is because my top was too open and showed too much skin (whooops..), as a sign of respect, we need to cover up a bit. I’m just not quite sure what type of tank tops or sleeveless tops are allowed because inside the temple, I saw others wearing the same tops as mine and they didn’t need to cover up. To be safe, better bring a scarf or jacket when wearing a tank top to avoid this fashion-confusion-look like I had!

Entrance fee: 50 THB (Php 79.70)

*Also! When taking a photo with the Buddha head, you must sit or bend down a bit to show respect*

After Wat Mahthat, we went ahead and grabbed our lunch at Sala, Ayutthaya. It’s one of the most amazing restaurants I have ever been. Before you get to your table, you pass through this amazing gallery filled with different artworks.

Then through a “picture-perfect” hallway.

Down to the dining area with a view a temple right across the moat. I ordered Pad Thai btw.

3. Wat Phra Si Sanphet

The third temple we went to was Wat Phra Si Sanphet. This temple was then the holiest temple on the site of the Royal Palace until completely destroyed by the Burmese in the 1700s. Here we saw 3 great stupas. Our tour guide, “Noy”, told us that these 3 great stupas were made for the King, his Father and the Grandfather.

4. Wat Chaiwatthanaram

Last temple for the day was Wat Chaiwatthanaram. Out of all the temples we visited, I have to say that this is the most impressive for me. It reminded me of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, though I haven’t been there (would love to visit Cambodia some time!). Since this temple has stunning pointed arches, including them in the photo, creates an interesting frame for your shot. This brings a whole new perspective in your picture.

Entrance fee: 50 THB (Php 79.70)

If you ever plan to visit any of these temples remember that most, if not all of the Temples in Ayutthaya have entrance fees, so make sure to bring extra cash along with you!
